In God We Trust
In the movie, Jerry
McGuire, a professional football player keeps screaming in the phone
to his agent: "SHOW ME THE MONEY!" The player
wanted his agent to find him a position on a team that would pay a big
salary. His agent would make a lot of promises but never back
them up with any contract. The player became so frustrated, he
just kept screaming the sentence in the phone. Within weeks,
this sentence became past of everyday conversation in this
country.
IN GOD WE TRUST... The United States is the only country in the
world that has this message on its money. With the growing
hostility towards organized religion in recent years, one can only
wonder how much longer these words will appear on our
money.
Yet, they are only
words unless they are lived. It is more important that these
words be written on our hearts than on our money. At a time when
our nation is enjoying great prosperity; so few people are
happy. Rev. Joe Wright once opened the new session of the Kansas
Senate with a prayer that upset many of the legislators. Here
are some of his words:
"Heavenly Father, we have lost our spiritual equilibrium and
reversed our values. We confess that we have ridiculed the
absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism. We have
worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We have
endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle. We have
exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have r4ewarded
laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and
called it choice.
Heavenly Father, we come before You today to ask Your forgiveness and
to seek Your direction and guidance."
This dollar bill may
look attractive but it can't buy happiness. Rather than cling to
our money, we should cling to God. People who trust in money die
spiritually bankrupt. People who die trusting in God receive
eternal life.
